Schooley Mill Park is one of Howard County’s hidden gems. It is rarely crowded and has some fantastic trails to walk.
It also has a variety of habitats including wetlands, woodlands, and meadows that are maintained in their natural state to provide food, shelter, and nest sites for wildlife.

Fields
The park is home to a playground and several multi-purpose fields. Located near the multi-purpose building, there are restrooms and picnic tables. A new playground was installed in 2021 and follows a farm and agricultural theme.
Howard County broke ground on Nov. 2 to renovate Schooley Mill and add the county’s only regulation-size cricket field, expected to be ready in time for the Howard County Cricket League’s 2013 season. However, some residents fear the new field will eliminate the quiet, sleepy atmosphere of the park.
Located just outside of Columbia, Highland Maryland is known for its large acreages where horse farms thrive. Playground
Schooley Mill Park is a hidden gem with so many things to do! The playground has a farm theme and is PERFECT for crawlers/early walkers! It has a ton of low-height play panels, gently sloped slides, and a tractor structure with ramps. It’s also fully accessible and wheelchair friendly (which isn’t common in Howard County parks) – even has a huge fully wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round!
Throughout the park, hikers can stroll along 4.6 miles of trails. Some of these paths cross wetlands, woodlands, meadows, and creeks. The park is maintained in its natural state, allowing for food, shelter, and nesting opportunities for birds and other wildlife.
Some residents are upset about the renovations to the playground. They say they don’t want to lose the quiet and sleepy atmosphere of the park, and that it wasn’t fair for them to have to weigh in on the decision-making process. The county broke ground on Nov. 2 to build the county’s only regulation-size cricket field. Check it out here.
Picnic Shelters
The park has several picnic areas with pavilions, as well as trails that wind through wooded areas and along streams. Hikers can also find a few miles of paved trails that are perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling.

Equestrian Facilities
Schooley Mill Park has 4.6 miles of trails and features athletic fields, equestrian rings, a playground, and picnic areas.
A horse-centric county, Howard has English and Western horse shows, lesson barns, fox chasing, and steeplechases. The county is home to Thoroughbred farms such as Chanceland Farm in West Friendship, Marama Farm in Clarksville, and Wellington Park Farm in Lisbon. Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon is a national rescue and rehabilitation center for horses. The nonprofit shelters 110 to 150 horses annually from animal protection agencies.
